Oscars 2013: Miss Transmission’s Predictions

It’s that time of year again. In the 12 months since a silent movie ran away with three of the top prizes (Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture for The Artist), Steven Spielberg has raised Abraham Lincoln from the dead and Ben Affleck has become a triple actor-writer-director threat (though not, sadly, a dancer). Jennifer Lawrence has nabbed a second Oscar nomination at only 22, and 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis has gone one better and become the youngest actor ever to receive a nomination, for her first leading role in Beasts of the Southern Wild. And where would we be without some controversy? Snubs in the Best Director category for Ben Affleck and Katherine Bigelow drew a bit of comment

So, to predictions. There are 9 nominations in the Best Picture category, presenting arguably one of the tightest Oscar races in recent years. Indie film Beasts of The Southern Wild has a strong presence in the nominations but hasn’t seen much in the way of other mainstream awards. Foreign cinema seems to have a clear winner in Armour. But then you never can be sure when it comes to the Academy.

This post will be updated with the winners as they’re announced.

Those predictions leave Les Misérables on top with 4, but Argo and Lincoln walking away with 3 each and the big wins shared between them. Life of Pi also gets 3, but for what are arguably smaller prizes. Skyfall, with 2, beats Silver Linings PlaybookAmour, Django Unchained, Brave, and Anna Karenina with 1. Whilst Beasts of the Southern Wild really should be a big winner, there are too many big boys in the playground to reasonably hope it will get the recognition it deserves.
